How to Clean Makeup Brushes and Sponges

by admin

Makeup brushes and sponges are essentials in a makeup kit to perfect our everyday look. But it’s not very often that we clean them or give it the much-needed attention to extend their lifespan and maintain their hygiene. But just like how we wash our hands or face, these makeup tools also require regular cleaning to keep ourselves from acne, breakouts, and skin infections.

Here’s how to clean your makeup brushes and sponges:

1. Gather your tools

To effectively and safely clean your makeup brushes and sponges, you’ll need several things. First, a bowl or a sink, or you can use a cleaning mat slightly bigger than your tools. Next, you’ll need some hair shampoo, preferably an antibacterial one. For extra cleaning, use a makeup brush cleaner solution or a baking soda. Lastly, a clean towel or tissue or a hairdryer will help you dry your tools after washing them.

2. Wet the brushes or sponges

Start by running your brushes or sponge under lukewarm water, but make sure not to wet the brush handle as it can damage your brush. Apply some hair shampoo or a brush cleaner solution on the bristles or the sponge. Gently swirl or massage the bristles or the sponge on a cleaning mat or on your hand to remove all the makeup residues and dirt.

3. Rinse and repeat

Rinse your tools until the water becomes clear and there are no traces of soap left. If you feel the need to clean your brushes or sponges again, repeat the process for optimal cleaning.

4. Dry them up

After cleaning, gently press out the excess water from your brushes or sponges. Then, lay them on a clean towel or tissue to air dry. Don’t forget to reshape the bristles of your brushes while it’s drying to keep its original shape. It’s also essential to dry them away from direct sunlight or heat as it can damage the bristles or deform the sponge.

5. Store them properly

Once dried, store your brushes or sponges in a clean and dry place. If you’re traveling, put them in a makeup brush pouch to avoid dust and dirt. Consider washing them every two weeks or depending on how often you use them.

Maintaining clean makeup brushes and sponges is not only hygienic but also necessary to keep them in good condition. Clean them regularly to prolong their lifespan, ensure their safety, and maintain their quality. Make it a regular habit to avoid getting bacteria and infections on your skin, and keep your beauty routine as clean as possible.
